OpenAI Launches Budget-Friendly ChatGPT GO Subscription in India

OpenAI is making waves in the Indian market with the launch of its new ChatGPT GO subscription plan, priced at a competitive ₹399 per month (approximately $4.60). This move offers a more accessible entry point compared to the existing ChatGPT Plus plan, which costs ₹1,999 (around $23) monthly.
The company has also recently introduced local currency pricing across all its subscription tiers, enhancing convenience for Indian users. Further streamlining the payment process, OpenAI will now accept payments through UPI (Unified Payment Interface), India's widely adopted payment framework.
Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, highlights the benefits of the new plan:
- Substantially increased limits for message, image generation, and file uploads—a tenfold increase over the free tier.
- Enhanced memory retention for more personalized and contextually relevant responses.
Turley emphasizes that the introduction of ChatGPT GO is directly addressing user demand for more affordable access to the platform. The initial rollout is focused on India, with plans to gather user feedback before potentially expanding the plan to other regions.
The ChatGPT GO plan aims to provide a more affordable alternative for users primarily interested in utilizing ChatGPT for tasks such as chatting, generating images, and processing files.
Market Context and Competition
News of this new subscription tier had been circulating, fueled by earlier leaks from industry insiders like Tibor Blaho.
While currently exclusive to India, OpenAI has indicated intentions to broaden the availability of ChatGPT GO to additional regions in the future.
ChatGPT boasts a substantial global user base, with over 700 million weekly users, a significant increase from 500 million in March. The company's updated image generation feature for ChatGPT, launched in March, has witnessed increased adoption within India.
Data from AppFigures reveals that India leads in ChatGPT app downloads, with over 29 million downloads in the past 90 days. However, revenue generated in the country during this period reached $3.6 million.
The introduction of competitively priced ChatGPT GO is expected to drive higher subscription rates in India. This development comes as other AI companies are also vying for market share in India's rapidly growing internet user base. Perplexity, for example, recently partnered with Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions. Google has also extended free AI Pro plans to students in India for one year.
While OpenAI's strategy does not involve free offerings, the combination of local pricing and enhanced features is poised to improve ChatGPT's subscription conversion rates within India.
